Human skin is made up of two primary layers: the epidermis and the dermis. The outermost epidermis defends skin against external aggressors. Inside the dermis, fibroblasts synthesize type I and type III collagen, the key substances maintaining skin firmness and bounce. With aging, the DEJ gradually flattens and collagen breaks down. The link between epidermis and dermis weakens, resulting in sagging skin and fine wrinkles.
Few skincare formulations can fully cross healthy epidermis to reach the dermis. Most active compounds operate on the epidermal level to restore skin barrier function and counter oxidative damage. Only select small-molecule ingredients can penetrate down to the DEJ, supporting the basement membrane's protein framework and keeping the epidermis-dermis connection intact. To trigger fresh collagen synthesis within the dermis, cosmetic procedures are generally required. Daily skincare aims to safeguard the epidermal barrier, slow deterioration of the DEJ structure and cut down collagen depletion for stable, healthy skin.
